The duty of Tibetan new generation
Tenzin Nyibhum Sangling (B.H.U Varanasi)
Abiding the duty and focusing upon the personal happiness is not what a mere human being should consider. Instead of focusing about the wellbeing of an individual, one should always consider looking for a far greater aspect in life. As in Tibetan, the mindset of believing and considering the importance of others before self is the primary concept of teaching in the younger generation along with the practice of love and compassion. But again, Buddhism is the religion of Tibetan and not the part of Tibetan.
Duty on the other plays a significant role in one’s life. Whether, it is an action that a person is obligated to or sometimes the duty which was once an obligation for that person turns into a burden. If duty is based upon certain form of work that needs to be done in a sustainable manner, then in every position, the work that defines through a morality and a sustainable form may or may not be the same depending upon the different fields of work done. But it is not the work that defines the duty, unless your breathing becomes a work done. As an individual, a person can depict what duty he needs to be done and how it should be done. But on a larger scale, a simple misconception can lead towards a disaster. Whereas, imagining the perfect world might be an accountable but in reality the concept of positive and negative, black and white and good and bad, needs to be functional and balance in everything.
Defining Tibetan new generation
Who are you? Where are you from?
Before we could actually understand what duty that needs to be done for a Tibetan new generation, we must thoroughly acknowledge ourselves with the present condition and the general concept of duty within the community of Tibetan people. What lifestyle have we been living through and how far the development has implemented within the societies. And most importantly, what kind of perception does the younger generation holds up in their mind?
Under the various situations,
• Broadly classifying the Tibetan youth based upon the area in which they have been situated includes, the Tibetan youth staying inside the Tibet and the Tibetan youth grownup in exile.
• There are Tibetan students studying in the school, high school and colleges in Tibet, India, Nepal and various others aboard countries.
• There are also working citizens of Tibetan younger generation in various fields of work with certain people achieving in a far greater success in their own professional work as well as job.
• Various organization that includes the Tibetan youthstudying as well as working youth to come under the same idea of forming certain organization. That includes the increasing numbers of non-government organization where some were aided by the government as well.
• Further, I would like to categorize the following lifestyle of Tibetan youth as a monk in monasteries and the armyserving in SFF. (Special frontier force) because of the vast number of Tibetan youth in these two lifestyle and more importantly due to the different environment from the rest.
• Other than the above meaningful classification based upon various factors, some Tibetan youth from across the world has adapted into another culture due to the consequences of certain situation they have faced.
May be it counts in era that the new generation may have surpassed and flourished through the old generation or the new generation might have accounted through certain idea that would enrich our understanding from the past knowledge. The duty we are contributing for the wellbeing of others through the respective fields without the prime objection of hurting the sentiments of the other being would definitely light up the path towards the compassion.
But the duty we follow might end up after certain period of time or sudden change in the environment that would lead into changing the habitual behavior and lifestyles. Further it would also effect in the duty that one holds.
“If there is a method than the method produces its own end.”
J.K.Murti
Inspecting the duties that has been contributed in every situation in one’s life is somehow decided by the third person. Remember“duty is not the duty; the duty is just duty”.
Duty as a human being
Duty as a student
Duty as in work and job
Duty as in family
Duty as a citizen of a community
• The duty of Tibetan new generation should include all the above mentioned duties and must hold a greater responsibility in every aspect. As a human being, our duty is to consider every other being having the equal right to live and show love and compassion towards them.
“Our prime purpose in life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.”
Dalai Lama
• As Tibetan students, our duty doesn’t lie only in studying the bookish knowledge and become an educated person who might later on manages to cope up with the outer world. Whereas, the modern education system that has been adopted in all the Tibetan schools along with the study of ethical and moral education has been aiding the students with the better reasoning and understanding of knowledge.
“When educating the minds of youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts.”
Dalai Lama
• In every working place, there are rules and duties that have been embedded in various forms for the productive work done. There again, it is not the work that defines the duty. Rather, one should inculcate the habit of cooperative working and sharing of knowledge for a better outcome. As a Tibetan youth, the perfection in its own field may seem more of a successful person but on a contrary, that person fails to perform its own duty when he is not able to produce a productive management among his co-workers.
“Happiness is not something ready-made; it comes from your own actions.”
Dalai Lama
• As a Tibetan youth in a family, one must inculcate the good manners and moral values taught by the elders in the family. One must also learn to appreciate the importance of the elders in the family and their hard work and dedication in the family.
“A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.”
Dalai Lama
• Being a citizen of community, one must understand the problems and help each other in almost all way possible for a better and much happier community. Being a citizen of community, one should always keep the good and strong relation with all the neighbors and community people.
“No being can survive alone; we’re all dependent to each other.”
There is no justification in what duty a person performs in any field. The step by step procedure may vary among every individual who performs a particular duty and there again, the duty itself has a various functional value in all the work done. The duty you’ve performed and another person has performed might be of different procedures but what resembles each other would mainly depend upon the conceptual thinking of the mind, while performing that particular duty. Either way, the duty performed for the work done is the resultant of the problem caused by the work done.
The duty of Tibetan new generation must not misunderstand the difference between the duty a person should perform for the desiring result and the duty a person should perform for the cause of that result. For some Tibetan younger generation, the mindset of duty has become limited to the priority of their choices and likes.
Remember even after getting the freedom from under the Chinese government, there will be a duty for a Tibetan younger generation to uphold.
