Role and personal experiences and reflection of the students

Tenzin Nyibhum Sangling Roll No. 18

As a part of 4th year integrated B.Ed programme, there is a community studies project that needs to be done. On 9th April’17 i.e. on Sunday, the 4thyear students had a one day community studies project at Sigra, Varanasi. We were very much given instruction by our educational professors Anita Sharma madam and Jai Prakash sir for the community studies project before the actual day of the survey. As a part of instruction, first thing we have to wear is a proper dress and maintain a proper discipline while interacting with the communities. We discussed our lunch with the cook and decided to pack bhaklap and omelette for our lunch.  Community survey project is keeping positive objectives which will enable us to create awareness related to communities, understand the issues related to children, developing the social, negotiation and adjustment skills as well as understanding the social, community and personal problems. There were 18 students in our class and we have been already divided among three groups that will further work in the same group during survey.

On the 9th morning, as our administration had already booked auto for our transportation, we hurried inside auto and made ourselves comfortable. Jai Prakash sir also came along us and after reaching at the destination, our botany sir (A. N Singh) was already waiting for us. We waited for a few minutes after which Vishnu sir accompanied us with our survey. Along the professors, we went towards the colony Mandir, where every family from Sindhi colony comes to pray on auspicious days.

The particular area of Sigra, where we surveyed is called Sindhi colony or Ashok Nagar. Sindhi is considered as the centre of Varanasi with Sigra stadium as the main stadium in the city where first class cricket matches are held since 1964.

We rested there for a while but with the flick of time, I could see some families joyfully coming towards us for interview. Our professor had a brief conversation with the local people mainly Mr Brigesh Dixit and Mr Nand Kishor Arora. Our stay at the Mandir was a very cool place of adjust many students and the open hall benefited us for large quantity of interviewers.

At the time, we interviewed few of the families at the Mandir itself. Many of the local prefers to come along with their families for being interview by us and we’ve been very much helped to convert the Mandir into a real interviewing place by the local themselves. Some of the group already started interviewing the locals and along with them, our group also started with full enthusiasm.

There were 6 students in each group and as we had already discussed earlier, our group would interview slightly different than others. We already discussed within us and made 24 questions keeping in view of the objectives. One member of the group clicked the picture and videos of interviewing for record and rest 5 members of the group were helping each other by asking questions alternatively and noting it down precisely.

We have divided our questions in to 5 parts as it was already sectioned by the professors before handing us the instruction papers. Our questions were mainly based into 5 parts; economic activities, health related activities, educational activities, social activities and political activities.

The locals working at the Mandir offered us water, tea and snacks while we were interviewing the locals. We have already collected plenty of data by surveying at Mandir and further, after taking a short break; we went along group to some of the local houses for survey. Every house in Ashok Nagar (Sigra) is a storage building with very close spaces in between the house and the house normally doesn’t have open veranda and huge dining hall as we compare it with the Sarnath localities.

Our group had interviewed 6 families in total and other groups were around the same number as well. Around 1:30 in the afternoon, we were almost done with the survey. Since it was a very hot day, we have been invited for a cool sikanzi juice, homemade by Mrs. Kaya Arora. It was a walking distance from Mandir (Ashok Nagar) to Shastri Nagar where she uses to live there with a son. Though we have already interviews her, still we didn’t realised the possibilities of her hard work in many of the working areas.

Likewise, her house is much door room and they were all congested into a small rooms but she managed them very well by herself and her son. A beauty salon on the right and tailoring on the left room were perfectly managed. Shastri colony is a slightly different than Ashok Nagar. As per the information provided by the Vishnu Sharan sir and A. N Singh, Shastri community has a different ways of lifestyle and occupation than those of Ashok Nagar community. Many of the people staying in the Shastri colony try to own their working occupation by many different ideas of job support from varies fields. As we had seen Mrs Kaya Arora, she is a single woman, raising a son and working in different jobs established by her with very innovative procedure and assessable area such as tailoring, beauty salon, etc. After a short duration at her home, we hurried down the main road and once again we rode auto back to college campus.
